TECHNICAL DATA

Karl Benz's hobby brought him to a bicycle repair shop in Mannheim owned by Max Rose and Friedrich Wilhelm Eßlinger. In 1883 the three founded a new company, Benz & Company Rheinische Gasmotoren-Fabrik, referred to as, Benz & Cie. which produced industrial machines in Mannheim.

In 1886, Carl Benz built a motorized tricycle and later a four-wheeler, the Victoria, was built in 1893.

In 1882, some short distance away, Gottlieb Daimler and his partner Wilhelm Maybach developed the first high-speed four-stroke engine which was completed in 1883.

October 1883, Mannheim, Benz founded the firm Benz & Cie.

November 1890, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) was formed.

In 1899, Emil Jellinek, started racing under his pseudonym Mercédès, which referred to the team and driver.

December 22, 1900, Emil Jellinek, recieved a car developed by Wilhelm Maybach, the chief engineer at DMG, for his race team. This car "with its low center of gravity, pressed-steel frame, lightweight high-performance engine and honeycomb radiator, it featured numerous innovations and is regarded today as the first modern automobile" and was call a 'Mercedes'

June 23, 1902, Emil Jellinek legally registered 'Mercédès' and obtained permission to call himself Jellinek-Mercedes.

June 1909, Gottlieb Daimler and The DMG had both a three-pointed and a four-pointed star registered as trademarks and was using Mercedes as a brand name.

1924, DMG and Benz & Cie., formed a separate and competitive syndicate.

June 1926, DMG and Benz & Cie., merged to form Daimler-Benz AG. "At this point a new trademark was designed, which brought together the main characteristics of both the existing emblems - the world-renowned three-pointed star belonging to Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft was surrounded with its trade name 'Mercedes' as well as that of the equally famous name 'Benz', whose laurel wreath entwined the two names together."
