Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Monterey Classic Car Week. All 3 titles are huge. First there was the raceway, Laguna Seca, host for the craziness that was CAN-AM with 1,000 HP cars slamming down the Corkscrew in anger, and many other, now historic races.

Then a few guys got together and rented this Laguna Seca track to run their old race cars. Someone noticed and now it has morphed into the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Monterey Motorsports Reunion, is in homage to the Sports Car Club of America's Pebble Beach Road Races that ran through the Del Monte Forest on what is now part of the famed "17 Mile Drive" in the years 1950 -1956.

With the early historic races at Laguna Seca and the ongoing Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on the same weekend, car clubs started to hold their gathering in and around the Monterey Bay. Now, 2016, this lovely area is over run by every kind of car and car event one could think of. And it is all part of the Monterey Classic Car Week with the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, being the main anchor as it runs all week long.

This year 2016, featured BMW, Celebrating its 100th Anniversary.

Even though Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a the top of a hill overlooking the Bay the fog can cover the track making morning runs a challenge for the 'Gentleman Drivers', especially into the blind crest/drop-off at the Corkscrew. The Reunion brought together 15 classes of cars from every era of motor racing history. The Reunion brings together the cars and the drivers that raced them when they were being campaigned. One such driver, David Hobbs shared his stories as the highlighted guest speaker at the annual Picnic in the Park on Saturday, Aug. 20. On the track and three-time FIA Formula One World Drivers’ Champion, Sir Jackie Stewart and who was twice victorious in the 1971 Can-Am, driving the Lola T-260 , attended this year’s event celebrating the Can-Am days .

Gill Campbell, CEO of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca attests to the popularity of the day: “The Reunion is the largest and most prestigious historic race in this country; what we really specialize in and focus on is the authenticity of the cars – they have to be prepared according to their original specifications, in their original livery and almost all the vehicles attending have real racing history. It is incredibly important for us to acknowledge and celebrate the heritage of the automobile – we need to recognize where we came from in order to know where we are going. That is why it is such a natural fit partnering with a brand like Rolex – they understand what we are trying to achieve here – we share the same aspirations and values of preserving the past and celebrating tradition. As much as the Reunion is an event, it is also a coming together of friends for four days of entertainment and enjoyment”.

After hard competition and exciting racing, ( yes these guys do put a serious foot to the race peddle) it was Car 101 in Group 7A Can-Am (1968-1974), the 1971 Shadow Mk II that triumphed, claiming the Spirit of Monterey Award and the ultimate racing driver’s watch, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona. This timepiece, awarded to the winning car’s owner, Jim Bartell, was the perfect way to commemorate such a momentous achievement.
