ALM and Sports Car Racing Championships

Monterey, California

Marco Werner and Lucas Luhr ended their championship season in fitting style Saturday with an overall victory for Audi Sport North America in the Monterey Sports Car Championships presented by Patrón. Werner passed Emanuele Pirro on a restart with 26 minutes left and won by 1.941 seconds at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

PROLOGUE
The Monterey Sports Car Champions presented by Patrón: Helio Castroneves, one of the most exciting drivers in the IndyCar series for Penske Racing is joining this weekend’s American Le Mans Series race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca This 2.238-mile ribbon of asphalt is among the most revered racing circuits in the world.

Short of taking a trip to France, this is the best way to see the high-speed, high-tech Le Mans Prototypes and GT cars of the American Le Mans Series. This four-hour endurance challenge is patterned after the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Must-See Sunday afternoon Race, Racing into Darkness, concludes the season with Le Mans Prototypes from Audi, Porsche, Mazda, Acura, Dodge and Ford battling on the same track with production-based GT cars from Corvette, Porsche, Ferrari and Panoz.

Started in 2004, the close of the American Le Mans Series season brings Racing into Darkness to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The Monterey Sports Car Championships attracts the best sports car teams in the world to this historic 2.238-mile Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and site of the famed Corkscrew turn.

HERE ARE THE CHALLENGES FOR THIS RACE!

Sascha Maassen and Penske Porsche RS Spyder seek second consecutive overall pole Audi seeks fifth Laguna Seca ALMS overall pole and sixth in GTP/P900/P1; Rinaldo Capello (2000 and 2001), Emanuele Pirro (2002) Frank Biela (2003) are previous Audi OVERALL polewinners; Capello is the only two-time Laguna Seca ALMS overall polesitter! Allan McNish won P1 pole in 2007, started fifth overall

Laguna Seca ALMS race enters 2008 with nine-race streak of races with margins of victory less than one lap (1999 margin 13.889 seconds; 2000 victory margin 0.352 second, 2001 margin 1.602 seconds, 2002 margin 25.799 seconds, 2003 margin 82.283 seconds, 2004 margin 56.832 seconds, 2005 margin 75.064 seconds, 2006 margin 18.579 seconds, 2007 margin only 0.410 seconds!) and multiple lead-lap finishers in each race (seven in 2007!)

Chevrolet Corvette seeks fourth total and second consecutive Laguna Seca ALMS GTS/GT1 triumph after ending streak of five consecutive Laguna Seca ALMS GTS losses for Corvette with a Ron Fellows/Johnny O'Connell 2004 win followed by an Olivier Beretta/Oliver Gavin victory in 2005! Corvette lost to ORECA Dodge Viper drivers Olivier Beretta/Karl Wendlinger in 1999 and 2000 and to Konrad Saleen pilots Terry Borcheller and Franz Konrad in 2001, lost to Prodrive Ferrari 550 Maranello of Tomas Enge and Peter Kox plus runnerup Terry Borcheller/Franz Konrad in Konrad Saleen in 2002, and lost to Prodrive Ferrari 550 Maranello of David Brabham and Jan Magnussen in 2003 prior to its 2004-2005 victories. Prodrive Aston Martin won GT1 in 2006. Olivier Beretta/Oliver Gavin won for Corvette in 2007!

2008 Star Mazda Championship
Coming into Round 12 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is the final race of the 2008 Star Mazda Championship season. A trio of top young racers, two Americans and an Irishman, are in the fight of their young careers for the series championship and the big prize that goes with it, the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder scholarship to move up and race in the 2009 Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda.
