The Dakar!

A motorcycle rider named Thierry Sabine came upon a dream in the Libyan Desert during the 1977 Abidjan-Nice Rally.

His dream was to race from Paris down the continent of Africa to Dakar. He would call it The Paris-Dakar Rally. In December of 1979, 182 (2, 3, and 4 wheeled) vehicles of all types started on the 10,000 kilometer race into the unknown, 74 of the starters finished and history was made.

During the 1986 event, Thierry Sabine's career as racer, and promoter, ended in a helicopter accident, which also killed French singer Daniel Balavoine, journalist Nathaly Odent, pilot François Xavier-Bagnoud and radio technician Jean-Paul Le Fur.

To date 27 reported deaths of competitors, racing their vehicles, have occurred during the Rallys. 41 additional deaths have been in combination with the race over the years, which have involved team support members, media members, race support, and spectators. But the thrill is an unavoidable draw.

In 2008 the ugly world of the modern day terrorist impacted the Rally and given the threats, the Rally was canceled at the last hour.

2009 saw the answer to the hostilities on the African continent. The race was moved to South America. A remarkable 113 bikers, 13 quad riders, 91 car teams and 54 truck teams finished the first ever Latin-America rally-raid now just called 'The Dakar' wowing all the people watching in the host countries, Argentina and in Chile.

The 2014 Dakar took on 3 countries, Argentina, Chile and Bolivia, to give the racers the most challenging terrain possible. The South America's open terrain allowed racers to find the best routes that matched their machines. There were also five special stages on completely separate routes, one for motorcycles and quad bikes and one for cars and trucks. Racer safety was also improved on the special stages, keeping cars/trucks and the lighter bikes/quads apart.

If riding 10,000 kilometer off-road on a motorcycle is not difficult enough, this year's Raid had 2 marathon sections, of a total of 2,702 km which required 2 days of racing without team support.

„Dakar 2014 je bio najteži Dakar do sada. Ali, to mi odgovara. Što je teži bolje vozim. Voleo bih da naredni, Dakar 2015, bude joŠ teži“. Ovo je na povratku iz Južne Amerike, preko Pariza, rekao na Surčinskom aerodromu Gabor Sagmajster.

Vozeći motocikl KTM 450 sa startnim brojem 72, nakon 13 etapa i preko 8.000 takmičarskih kilometara, osvojio je odlično 53. mesto među motociklistima, od 196 prijavljenih, od toga startovalo 173, odustalo 95, a zavrŠilo 78.

Imajući u vidu da se od bivaka do starta i od cilja do bivaka svake etape mora preći joŠ par stitina kilometara, to sve ukupno daje preko 10.000 kilometara. Kako je Gabor rekao svaki dan su morali da prelaze i do 1.000 km. Na pojedinim etapama Gabor Sagmajster je bio i među prvih 40, veliki uspeh. Na 9. etapi Gabor Sagmajster je pao i teže povredio desno rame, imao je utisak da ga je polomio.

A do tada se na viŠe oslanjao na to rame, imajući u vidu da je levo rame već polomio na takmičenju sredinom 2013. Adrenalin ga je držao, te je uspeo da zavrŠi ovu etapu, sa poslednjim atomima snage.

Na 10. etapi je startovao sa velikim bolovima. Na početku je imao problema i sa navigacijom, morao je da se vrati na start okolnim putem, u protivnom bi morao da se popne na 1.200 metara nadmorske visine po pesku, dinama i bespuću, na stazi koja je već bila razlokana prolaskom kamiona i automobila, a i motocikl nije imao dovoljno snage. Vozio je viŠe od 130 km i duže od 3 sata. Ovde je izgubio plasman ispod 50. mesta.

Ovo su bila najveća iskuŠenja za Gabora Sagmajstera na Dakaru 2014. Do kraja je vozio pod lekovima koji su mu umirili bol, ali mu je pokretljivost ruku bila smanjena.

Lekovi su sigurno uticali na i njegovu brzinu reakcije. Gabor je prisutnima na aerodromu pohvalio dejstvo leka, demostrirao umanjenu pokretljivost ruku i rekao da su mu ostale samo dve pilule tog leka. Gabor je imao samo reči hvale za svoju prateću ekipu. SavrŠeno je funkcionisala, vladala je prijateljska atmosfeva, bodrili su ga, uvek su bili tu da mu pomognu, i to je umnogome doprinelo njegovom uspehu.

Na ovogodiŠnjem takmičenju podrŠku su mu davali Predrag Peđa Milinković, novinar RTS-a, i Vlade Rajević, motokrosista iz Požege, koji su sa joŠ dvojicom kolega iz Slovenije u iznajmljenom vozilu Toyota Hilux pratili takmičenje. Svi su se smenjivali za upravljačem. Sa Gaborom su se viđali u bivaku, pomagali mu savetima, bodrili ga, pravili mu druŠtvo.

Gabora Sagmajster su na Surčinskom aerodromu dočekali brojni navijači, sa transparentima, predstavnici medija, predstavnici glavnog sponzora Euro Petrol iz Subotice, oni su mu doneli i flaŠu Šampanjca, a Gabor ga je uz prasak čepa otvorio, i sinovi, stariji Sabolč i mlađi Ričard, već iskusan takmičar i moto-krosu, verovatno budući učesnik Dakara.

Gabor Sagmajster je izuzetno zadovoljan svojim učeŠćem i postignutim rezultatom na Dakaru 2014. žao mu je Što nije uŠao u prvih 50, ali je ovo njegov najbolji rezultat do sada.

Njegov motocikl, KTM 450, ima iza sebe već tri učeŠća na Dakaru i joŠ nekoliko takmičenja, preŠao je viŠe od 40.000 takmičarskih kilometara, po najgorim i najtežim mogućim terenima. Pred ovogodiŠnje takmičenje je generalno repariran, ali za sledeće bi bio red da ga zameni novim. A to zavisi, naravno, od finansijskih sredstava. Već na aerodromu je, u Šali, počeo razgovore o tome sa prestavnicima sponzora. Ovo je sada postao državni projekat i on očekuje veću pomoć države.

Bilo je puno priče o takmičenju, Gaborovim problemima sa pocepanim gumama, njegovoj jakoj volji da po svaku cenu zavrŠi takmičenje, o konkurentima, fabričkom ekipama,... Bilo je kasno, posle ponoći, a Subotica je daleko. Gabor se smestio u jedno od vozila koja su doŠla po njega i obećao skoro viđenje sa novim pričama o Dakaru 2014.

"Dakar 2014 Dakar was the hardest so far. But it suits me. What is a hard drive (is) better. I wish the next, Dakar 2015, to be even more difficult." This is on the way back from South America, via Paris, said Gabor Sagmajster at the airport Surcin .

Riding an old KTM 450 with starting number 72, after 13 stages and over 8,000 competitive kilometers, Gabor has finished an incredible 53rd place among motorcyclists, out of 196 applicants, of which 173 started. 95 dropped and 78 finished.

Bearing in mind that from the start to the finish each stage must exceed a few kilometers extra, this gives a total of over 10,000 kilometers. As Gabor said every day they had to run up to 1,000 km. At certain stages Gabor Sagmajster was among the first 40 to reach the stage end, a great success. On the 9th phase Gabor Sagmajster fell and seriously injured his right shoulder, that he felt that he broke.

Until then, he was most relied upon that shoulder, bearing in mind that he broke the left shoulder, in the last race mid 2013. Adrenalin kept him going, and he managed to finish this stage, with the last ounce of strength.

The 10th stage started with a lot of pain. At the beginning he had problems with navigation, having to go back to start a roundabout way, otherwise he would have to climb to 1,200 meters above sea level in the sand, dunes and wilderness, on a course that has already been destroyed by passing trucks and cars, the motorcycle would not have enough power. He was driving more than 130 km for more than 3 hours. His place dropped below 50 spots.

These were the biggest challenges for Gabor Sagmajster in the 2014Dakar. By the end, he was driving with the medicines that soothe his pain, which effected his dexterity and certainly affected his speed and reactions. Gabor at the airport praising the drug, demonstrated a reduced mobility of his hand and said that he used up all but two pills of the drug.

Gabor had only good words of praise for his supporting team. It worked perfectly and with a friendly the atmosphere, cheered him, They were always there to help him, and largely contributed to his success.

At this year's competition Gabor had the support of Predrag Pedja Milinkovic, RTS journalist, and the Government Rajević, motos-specialest from Požege, who with two colleagues from Slovenia followed him in a rented Toyota Hilux track. They all took turns at the wheel and in the bivouac, helped him with advice, and cheered him on.

Gabor Sagmajster was extremely satisfied with everyone's participation and achievements in this Dakar in 2014.

He is however, sorry he did not finish in the top 50, but this is his best result so far.

His motorcycle, KTM 450, has had a share in the past three Dakar and several other competitions, ran more than 40,000 competitive kilometers, over the worst and most difficult terrain. Before this year's competition it was completely repaired, but in the future it would be in order to replace it. That depends, of course, on funding. Already at the airport, in jest, he began talks with representatives of the sponsors about it. This has now become a state project and he expects more help from the state.

Vozeći motocikl KTM 450 sa startnim brojem 72, u maraton klasi, na ovogodišnjem izdanju jednog od najperstižnijih svetskih auto-moto događaja Dakar 2014 Gabor Sagmajster je osvojio odlično 53. mesto. Njegov najbolji rezultat do sada.

Ovo je bio povod da firma Euro Petrol iz Subotice, njegov glavni sponzor, organizuje konferenciju za medije kako bi se šira javnost detaljnije upoznala sa svim izazovima koje ovo takmičenje nosi.

Iako su organizatori već unapred najavljivali da će ovogodišnji Dakar biti izuzetno težak i iako je Gabor putem interneta imao prilike da se upozna sa stazom, situacija na terenu ga je iznenadila. Ovako težak Dakar ipak nije očekivao.

Već prvog dana ih je čekao ozbiljen specijalni ispit u dužini od oko 250 kilometara. Drugog dana su već krenuli u dine. Teći dan je bio paklen. Preko 4.700 metara nadmorske visine. Gabor je morao da skida filter za vazduh sa motocikla kako bi motor mogao da „diše“. Gusto sito Dakara. Tada je skoro 40 procenata takmičara odustalo.

Do petog dana se videlo ko je za Dakar, a ko ne. šesti dan je bio predviđen za odmor. Sedmog i osmog dana takmičari su se vozili u Boliviji. Doček u Boliviji je bio izvanredan, puno gledalaca, predsednik Morales je došao i na star i na cilj etapa koje su se tu vozile. Obilazi je takmičare, razgovarao sa njima, posetio ekipu Gabora Sagmajstera, na kratko se zadržao u razgovoru sa njim. I fotografisao. Puno vojske i policije bilo je angažovano kako bi se obezbedila potpuna sigurnost takmičarima u Boliviji.

Prema Gaborovim rečima osmi, deveti, deseti i jedanesti takmičarski dan su bili pravi Dakar. čini mu se da je devetog dana previše jurcao, ušao je u isušenu reku, nije dovoljno podigao prednji točak i udari je u drugu stranu isušenog korita. U prvom trenutku mu se činilo da je polomio desno rame. Bolovi su bili veliki. Pored polomljenog i operisanog levog ramena sa kojim je došao na Dakar sada je sredio i desno. Jedva je završio tu etapu. U bivaku su ga pregledali lekari i konstatovali da je samo jako ugruvao rame. Od tada pa do kraja takmičenja vozio je pod dejstvom lekova. Desetog dana imao je problem sa navigacijom. Promašio je jedan ček point, to bi mu donelo penalizaciji, a GPS uređaj mu je pokazivao da mora nazad na dine. Odlučio se da se vrati okolnim putem, do starta etape, i to mu je, kako kaže, bila najveća greška. Vratio se i izgubio 2, 3 sata. Da nije bilo ovog gubitka vremena bio bi plasiran ispod 50. mesta.

Zadnje etape su bile lakše.

Prvog dan Gabor je nosio kacigu LS2, ostali Airoh. Njegova stara, više mu odgovara. Jaka volja, odlična fizička pripremljenost i izdržljivost starog motocikla su bili presudni za ovaj veliki uspeh. I veliko iskustvo. Gabor je već uvaženi učesnik Dakara.

Njegov motocikl je pregurao tri Dakara i još nešto više. Preko 43.000 paklenih kilometara. Dugogodišnji mehaničar Gaborove ekipe Kaizer Torsten je u poverenju rekao Peđi Milinkoviću, novinaru RTS i dugogodišnjem medijskom Gaborovom pratiocu, da se čudi kako ovaj motocikl uopšte završava etape. Na ovogodišnjem je bio najstariji takmičarski motocikl. Sada je samo za muzej. Gabor se nada da će ostati kod nas kako bi svi mogli da ga vide. Vreme je za novi, KTM 450 model 2014, uži, kraći, lakši, sa više kevlara. Na redu su sponzori, ponovo, ponovo, ponovo.

Riding a KTM 450 with starting number 72, in the marathon class, this year's edition of one of the world's most grueling automotive events, the Dakar 2014, Gabor Sagmajster won an incredible 53rd place finish. His best result so far. For the first day, the ozbiljen special examination with a length of about 250 kilometers. On the second day they are already on the dunes. The hard day was hellish. By the fifth day it was a challenge to see who was in Dakar, and who was not. The sixth day was scheduled for vacation. Seventh and eighth day racers were riding in Bolivia. New Year's Eve in Bolivia was outstanding, lots of spectators, President Morales came to the stage with the vehicles. Visiting the competitors, talked with them, visited the team Gabor Sagmajstera, and briefly engaged in a conversation with him. I photographed. A lot of army and police were at hand to ensure the complete safety of the competitors in Bolivia.

According to Gabor, the eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh day of competition were the real Dakar. At first it seemed that he broke his right shoulder. The pain was great. In addition to the operated and broken left shoulder which he came with to Dakar, he now has damaged the right. "I barely finished the stage". The bivouac doctors examined him and concluded that it was only very strained shoulder. From then until the end of competition he was driving under the influence of drugs. On the tenth day he had a problem with navigation. He missed a check point, it would have brought a penalty, a GPS device he had showed that he must return to the dunes. I decided to go back the long way, to the start of the stage, and to him, he says, was the biggest mistake. He came back and lost 2 to 3 hours. Were it not for the loss of time would be placed within the top 50 places.

The last stages were easier.

The first day Gabor is wearing an LS2 helmet, then switches to an Airoh, as its worn-in, and suits him more .

Strong will, great physical condition, experience and the endurance of his old motorcycle was crucial for his great finish. Gabor has become a respected participant of Dakar.

Gabor's KTM 450 has survived through an unreliable three Dakar runs, over 43,000 hellish kilometers. Pedja Milinkovic, RTS journalist and Gabor 's longtime media companion said in trust that longtime mechanic, Kaizer Torsten, be in wonder as to how this motorcycle held up through all stages. At this year 's end it was the most competitive motorcycle in the race. Now it's just a museum piece. Gabor hopes it will stay with us for all to see it.
