Daimler Majestic Major Limo 1963

Daimler Majestic Major Limo 1963
Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance 2009

Maker: the Daimler Motor Car Company of Coventry England; Model: Majestic Major Limousine (DR 451); Year manufactured: 1963; Number made: 800 (1960-1967); Body number: 139163z Motor number: 95051

This example was first released from the factory to Argentina for use as a British Government Consulate car, and was then used privately in Texas and later in Chicago. In 1995 this auto was located in Chicago and shipped to San Francisco bay area by the current owner. This is an unrestored example of a professionally maintained government / corporate automobile.

This automobile is not from the Mercedes Ben/ nee Daimler Benz stable. The only connection with the Mercedes is via the motor inventor, Gottfried Daimler. All driving components are original to the car and all numbers match. The only additions post-manufacture are the air conditioning system, rear reading lights and the hazard light switch.

The engine is a Daimler designed "hemi" displacing 4.5 litters which delivers 225 horsepower to this 4500 pound car. The transmission is a Borg Warner three band with an optional lock out of the third gear engaged from the drivers control panel. This model offers dual radios and heating systems, front and rear and as with all the limos was hand assembled in Coventry, whereas the majestic salon was assembled on a production line.

The history of the Daimler Motor Car Company began at the dawn of the motoring age. Founded and capitalized in 1893, the first manufactured auto was driven on the streets of Coventry in 1896. With Gottfried Daimler on the first board of directors, production of a range of cars was begun in 1897. And in 1899 the King of England began what was a long run of Royal Daimler patronage with his purchase of an 1898 model. That close relationship continued by the royal couples until 1953. The queen mum continued to enjoy her Daimler DK420 for as long as she lived, which was as a very long time.
