AllCarCentral's Photos: The Cars at Coventry Transport Museum

Coventry is the birthplace of the British cycle and motor industry.

I was greeted by the staff who were tipped to the fact that I was going to stop off and photograph the Jaguar Heritage cars in their care. The Coventry Transport Museum is unique from most I have visited as there is no fee to enter, as it appears are most all the museums in London. As a side note, after my visit I read that a very large collection of Jaguars was coming to the Jaguar Heritage group so hopefully someday this very unique British Heritage will be preserved within one area, much like present automotive manufactures museums.

My time allotment to see the cars was very short so I set straight off to the Jaguars. I was able to capture all the cars on display, as there were many less than I had hoped for as the collection had been split between 2 locations. I was told that the 'other' group of Jaguars had many of the racecars in it.

The Jaguar display was well documented and the cars were will lit for viewing. However as in the case of most museums they were quite close together and one could only see them from the front. My favorite car was the 2010 Jaguar C-X75 Concept and the explanation of the design-concept was very well presented.

One of the most interesting Jaguars, in my opinion and the opinion of the designers was the XJ13. This was the important for the 2010 Jaguar C-X75 Concept. Which is fitting as they made only 1 XJ13 and the test driver managed to mash it into a small ball and it was never rebuilt. However of note; I have seen a car at Pebble Beach that is said to be an exact replica of the original as it was to have been made from the original drawings. I also believe that the XJ13 is the subject of the new 're-creation' movement that is taking hold.

The next point of interest was the settings that the cars are displayed in. With many cars it is correct to the period of the car and the local environment of that time.

Many of the displays are quite dark however, reflecting the overall lack of illumination during the early years of the automobile. One of my favorites was setup like a period repair or maintenance shop giving a look back into the early life of the car and its caretakers.

As the museum is all about transportation but there are several non-automotive settings also. One was a bomb shelter from WWW-II, as Coventry was a major target considering the manufacturing within this area, which added to the overall width and depth of the displays.

My visit was on a Saturday and there was a car show in front of the building. Bonus! I had a quick look and then ran off to see what was waiting for me inside.
