Sundance Kid Rides (In An MG).

Every car has stories to tell. They range from the mundane (read: daily commute) to the fantastical. It began as a beautiful sunny morning, and I had my head under the hood of a car in a service bay while turning wrenches. Perhaps there were easier ways to pay for college but hadn't thought of them. Besides, having just purchased a new British sports car, I would eventually need all the mechanical experience I could get.

From behind, I could hear someone walk in, and without seeing who it was, a voice called out, "Excuse me". And as I turned around I could see a slender man- dressed in boots and jeans- standing in the doorway with a child holding his hand.

Lotus Mark IX

Lotus Mark IX A Most Unusual Lotus

Interesting Photograph - my friend, Jim Fleming, took it more than fifty years ago.

I knew the Lotus in Jim's photograph as the "Potus." I'm not sure who originally came up with the name Potus, but that was the acronym which Dr. Troy McHenry used when he described the car to my father earlier that year..

Mille Miglia

In search of the Mille Miglia

Our tour of Italy started in Rome and went north. The Mille turned back north at Rome signifying the halfway point heading back to Brescia, the finish. My route was the new A1 highway. The pride of Italian road building and engineering. The old Mille was a bit more west, running directly from Rome to Siena.

The Mille may have been ended by a Ferrari but it was not created with Ferrari in mind. Ferrari the car didn't exist back in 1927 when the Automobile Club (in) Brescia members discussed having a road race that would start and finish in Brescia but not before reaching Roma.

Spark SRT_01E

FIA Formula E championship

A newly formed FIA Formula E championship featuring open wheel cars powered exclusively by electric energy represents a vision for the future of the motor industry over the coming decades.

September 2014, will see the start of the Championship events in the heart of 10 of the world's leading cities - including London, Beijing and Los Angeles.

10 teams, each running with two drivers, will operate as an 'open championship' giving car manufacturers and constructors, following the technical 'formula' set out by the FIA, the opportunity to showcase their electrical energy innovations in a racing environment.

However, during the first season Formula E will be a spec championship with all teams using the Spark SRT_01E design, shown above. The Spark SRT_01E is the result of a 10 month collaboration between Spark Racing Technologies (a Matra-Segula spin off), McLaren Electronic, Williams Advanced Engineering, Dallara and Renault.

Of interest is the rule that only a single set of treaded tyres will be available for each car for the duration of the whole race meeting.

Names associated with the new Formula E; Drayson Racing, Dallara, McLaren, Williams, and the Land Speed Record group, Bluebird.

Ferrari Testarosa 512 TR

1993 Ferrari Testarosa 512 TR

By Michael Rockich

I wanted to learn more about this intriguing car. Corroboration of facts generally helps the case. It was at this time, and very fortuitously for my Ferrari learning curve, while attending the Ferrari Challenge at the Sonoma Raceway I met one John Dilena who actually owned a Testarossa. When I saw his sleek red 512 TR was first in line from the Ferrari car corral to take laps on track, and had a camera mounted on the car's roof to record exploits, I thought "who better to speak with"? From my conversations with John I became a believer that the Ferrari Testarosa is one serious machine.

1937 Morris Fourteen Six Series II

Shooting the 1937 Morris Fourteen Six Series II sn-802SO549971

She was a 1937 Morris Fourteen Six Series II. 6 cylinders in a straight line and 1400cc hence the name. 3 speed, 4 doors and the most antiquated instrument panel I have ever seen (unsurprisingly). Ian has spent many hours on his car but it still has the vast majority of it's original parts.

We set off to the first venue that I had in mind which was Norley Wood in the New Forest, near East Boldre. Having arrived at Ian's house in my Audi A4 the contrast to this car was huge and it is very interesting to see how far we have come in this amount of time. The other thing I noticed very quickly was that nearly everybody watched you go past and many, usually the older blokes, with a smile on their faces.

Mercedes Benz Museum

Mercedes Benz Museum

The Mercedes Benz Museum is just outside of Stuttgart, as is the Porsche Museum and with both museums available for, shall we say, the price of one. An extension of 2 days to our European tour was an easy choice to make.

The Museum is set up to start at the top and twist ones way down in a spiral. A short ride up in a gated elevator opens up in the first room displaying the story and history of the birth of the automobile.

I had 2 disappointments. The priceless collection of early racecars, the GP machines and the SL models were set up on an elevated ramp something like a banked race track. They were very difficult to see and even more difficult to photograph. The other disappointment was that these jewels of the museum was right a the end of the downward spiral display, and by the time I had reached them the loud speaker was saying that the building was closing.

Hooked On Driving Laguna Seca July 4, 2012

Hooked on Driving

"Hooked on Driving" is a high speed track experience for almost anyone who wants to have a go at high speed driving on the many different tracks around the US. There are many "drivers schools" sponsored by different auto clubs and tracks and I would believe that most are well run and provides a great driving experience, but I think 'Hooked on Driving' can be considered one of the best.

I decided I needed a first hand understanding of just what the 2005 911 Carrera S was made to do. Well I knew that I could not actually drive to the limits of the Carrera S, but I knew that the Carrera would take me to my limits, and an open race track with no speed limits would be the best place to learn about where this edge was.

The track event I chose was at Mazda Raceway at the famous Laguna Seca, in Monterey, California, where driving a Porsche down the "Corkscrew" is a drivers dream.

Memories of a Rare Alfa Romeo

It was a warm day in late fall a couple of years ago. I was with my friend, Peter Giddings in the paddock area at Thunderhill Raceway Park. Peter is a well-known car collector and a highly skilled racing driver. A considerable crowd was gathered around his latest automotive acquisition. It was a very special Alfa Romeo Grand Prix car of mid-thirties. The Ferrari emblem on the hood stood out in sharp con- trast to the maroon color of the body.

Here was the real thing-a documented Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo.

What Do Tire Companies Do?

Have you ever wondered what a tire company does? Consider Bridgestone, the world's largest tire company. Bridgestone does a great deal more than just putting rubber on your car to get you to the grocery store and to and from work. Some companies do sports, some are involved in responsible public service efforts, and others just do their job. Bridgestone does all three.

Ferrari Challenge:

The Ferrari Challenge has started the 2011 season in North America.

Gentleman racers have long played a significant role in Ferrari's racing program. Enzo Ferrari built racing Ferraris. He only built road cars so that he could continue to fund his racing.

The Ferrari Challenge which began in 1993, is run in the spirit of Enzo's original business plan. The Challenge expanded to North America in 1994. US Ferrari owners now have the opportunity to race on many of USA's finest tracks while sharing camaraderie with fellow Ferrari owners.

A 1960 Austin Mini 850 from 1982-1994

We towed it home on a chain. I can still remember the look on the seller's face when we reached the first stop sign. No brakes, remember. The Mini went flying by me and stopped only when it ran out of slack on the chain. I thought the seller was the expert at this kind of thing. After all, he runs "HARRY'S GARAGE".

Porsche Museum 2012

AllCarCentral's Photos of cars at The Porsche Museum Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, Germany 2012

As I was traveling in Europe the opportunity to make a tour of the Porsche Museum was one thing that could not be passed up, although it required a 2-day side trip. Our tour was to end in Frankfurt, so we booked a hotel in Stuttgart and hopped on to a train to same.

Entering the lobby I paid for my pass and asked to see a manager as I wanted to give the museum a copy of a photo book which I had published that had the images of the Porsche cars running through the Corkscrew at Mazda raceway, Laguna Seca, during the 2012 Rennsport Reunion. (A copy of the photo book can be purchase through the AllCarCentral.com Magazine website.) Much to my delight the floor manager returned with the Manager of Porsche's Historical Archive, Dieter Landenberger, who graciously accepted my book and offered to show me around the museum's repair shop where there were several cars being prepared.

10.31 Crewe: Bentley returns to the ice with their all-wheel-drive Continental GT for the 2013 Ice Driving Programme in February . Guests will explore a range of driving techniques and be lead by Finnish rally star, four-time World Rally champion, Juha Kankkunen and a team of expert instructors. In February 2011 Kankkunen broke his own Ice Speed Record, piloting a Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible to 205 mph (330 km/h) on the frozen Baltic Sea off the coast of Finland.

Participating guests in the two-day programme, will fly to the town of Kuusamo on a private charter, then be driven to the luxury Chalet Ruka Peak boutique hotel in the exclusive ski resort of Ruka, only 60 km from the edge of the Arctic Circle.

When not doing Hot Laps on the ice, a range of Nordic activities of Snowmobiling, a night-time husky sled safari, traditional Finnish smoke saunas and dinner at an historic reindeer farm are also available.
This beats sitting on a frozen lake and pulling fish out of your ice hole.

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster 2013

The new Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster:

The new Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster claimed by Lamborghini as the most exciting series production Lamborghini ever built, can be recognized by the unique profile of its upper area, which extends along new geometric lines from the removable roof to the engine hood.

The two-piece roof is carbon fiber engineered with technologies such as RTM and Forged Composite®. Each component is extremely light, weighing less than 6 kg, but guarantee maximum stiffness. These two parts are removable, lightweight, easy to handle, and simple to attach. They are stored in the front luggage compartment.

The rear pillar supports the removable roof and is part of an automatic protection system for passengers.

The engine hood on the Roadster has a "spinal column" with two pairs of hexagonal windows connected at the sides to cool the engine, drain off rain water and allow the beauty of the V12 power unit to be seen.

The Aventador LP700-4 Roadster accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3 seconds flat and has a maximum speed of some 350 km/h.

The drive train featuring a centrally located, 6.5 liter aspirated V12 generating 700 hp, an ISR 7-speed gearbox and push-rod suspension make the new Aventador Roadster a unique super sports car with no direct competition. The V12 is equipped with a cylinder deactivation system for when the engine is not working at full capacity and an instant Stop & Start system which includes high-performance capacitors known as supercaps to awaken the engine. This is an absolute first in the super sports car segment.

Porsche Type 918

A Mid-engine Porsche 960 Racecar?

Race teams driving Porsche 911 GT cars with their classic rear-engine layout have struggled right from the start of the 2012 race year. Great improvements were made to the 911 GT layout over the winter 2011-2012 off season, but the other teams did their development work also. The biggest challenge seems to have come from the mid-engine Ferrari 458 Italia.

Porsche is developing a mid-engine 918 plug-in hybrid with a 4.6 litre V8 engine, puting out 580 horsepower (430 kW), and with two electric motors delivering an additional 243 horsepower (181 kW) alongside the 911 GT2 racer.

Now there is talk about a Type 960 racer to fit in between the 911 GT2 and the 918 Spyder that, I would assume, be aimed at taking over the new challengers on the track. This 960 is rumored to be coming with a twin-turbo V8 engine putting out over 600 HP, and from the photos floating around the 960 could be based on the 918 platform.

As a fan of the Porsche 911, and I personally feel the last real 911 ended with the last air cooled 911, Type 993 back in 1998, it will be great for Porsche to bring out a new race car based on a mid-engine layout. Think 550 Spyder, 904, 908, 917, and 956, just to name a few.
